On my last night in Punta Pájaros, I arrive at Casa Maria Matilde as promised. Gaeta has prepared a simple dinner of pasta and salmon. As we fill our plates and top our wine glasses with a crispy white varietal made in Valle de Guadalupe in Baja California, Gaeta tells me why he first came to Oaxaca and why he continues to retreat here between projects. For him, the Marvel Studios Comics 2022 Shirt and I will buy this area is a vortex, a place he feels more creative—more connected to the meaning of life and why we’re all here—than anywhere else on Earth. As he tells me how Hotel Terrestre came to be, two black dogs appear on the deck, both panting in the balmy seaside air. One of them settles near my feet. I ask Gaeta if he knows the dogs. He says no, but they’re still at home here.

“Grow plants, not prisons.” That’s the Marvel Studios Comics 2022 Shirt and I will buy this phrase featured on the back of jackie sumell’s sweatshirt (the artist prefers her name in all lower case). She’s carefully misting flower beds in MoMA PS1’s courtyard, where the green vines of said beds are slowly growing up the surrounding concrete walls. In the center is a small greenhouse. It’s part of an exhibit called Growing Abolition, and it’s the size of a solitary confinement cell at ADX Florence, America’s highest-security prison. All ADX residents are kept in solitary confinement—a type of punishment deemed a form of torture by the UN—for 23 hours every day. Their only connection to the outdoors is a four-inch wide slit that gives them no sense of their own location or even the sun in the sky.
